Steampunk Owl

He is a clockwork owl: part owl, part machine, and all gentleman.

I made him from brown fleece, with a patterned cravat and pin-striped shirt. He has a wool felt vest with detailed trim and pocket. I have him a pocketwatch eyeglass monocle, linked to his vest with a chain and flower pin. He looks quite distinguished, doesn't he? He is about 7 inches tall and 4 inches wide.

Steampunk is my newest obsession: it's a fusion of beauty with machines, vintage and modern, form with function. It's a style with its roots in literature: a genre called "speculative fiction" where authors answer a basic question: "What if history had gone a different way?" What if technology were different, what if our machines were run by steam or clockwork, what would the world look like? What inventions wouldn't have been made, and what would have been made differently? I like "What if" statements. That is the core of creativity. And if you tie in history, science fiction and fantasy, you get Steampunk.
(Or as Erin says, "What's it called again? Clockopunk?")

  3. Love it AND I learned something new. Perfect.

I have been into Owls a lot lately... I made a few for my kiddos, and also made some notecards with a cutie patootie owl at the top. Happy SITS Saturday Sharefest!

And feel free to stop by and check out my owls. ;)
